Pitcher Sam Runion, who played at Asheville-Reynolds, has been promoted to Triple A by the Washington Nationals. Runion, who was taken in the second round of the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft by the Kansas City Royals, is playing with Syracuse in the International League.
It is the first Triple-A designation for Runion in his pro career. Runion made his first Syracuse appearance last Tuesday, pitching 2.1 scoreless innings. For the year, he has a 1-1 record with a 3.82 earned-run average with 34 strikeouts in 37.2 innings pitched.
If Runion makes it to the Majors, he would join western North Carolina natives Madison Bumgarner (South Caldwell) of the San Francisco Giants and Greg Holland (McDowell) of the Kansas City Royals.
