'Dads Drop Final Home Game PDF Print

The Hickory Crawdads wrapped up the home portion of their 2014 schedule with a loss Sunday night. The 'Dads fell to the first place Hagerstown Suns 7-2 in the final game of the year at L.P. Frans Stadium.

 

 

 

The loss moves the Crawdads () to the brink of elimination in the South Atlantic League playoff race. The 'Dads are now six game behind the Suns in the SAL's Northern Division with seven games left to play in the regular season. Their also 6 1/2 games behind Greensboro in the wildcard race.

 

Greensboro defeated Lakewood 4-1 on Sunday. Despite the loss, the Crawdads finish the season wwith a 37-34 record at home.

 

The Suns snapped 1-1 tie with three runs in the top of the fifth. And only one of those runs was earned. The rally also knocked starting and losing pitcher Collin Wiles (2-3) out of the game. Hagerstown then stretched the lead with a run in the sixth and two more in the seventh for a 7-1 lead.

 

Wilmer Difo paced the Suns () going 4-5 with a home run and two runs-batted-in; Carlos Lopez was 2-3 with a pair of doubles, a run scored and an RBI.

 

Zach Cone of the Crawdads homered in the bottom of the second inning; Jairo Beras had an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh. The Crawdads could have done more damage. They loaded the bases with nobody out, but Hagerstown reliever Manny Rodriguez settled things down and shut the door on Hickory.

 

Cone ended the night 1-3 with his second home run of the year, a walk, and two runs scored. Nick Urbanus went 3-4 with a double for his first three-hit game of the year; Beras finished 1-4 with an RBI.

 

Reynaldo Lopez (4-1) picked up the win. He gave up a run on three hits, with a walk, and four strikeouts over 5.2 innings. Wiles took the loss after giving up four runs, two earned, on seven hits with a walk during his 4.2 frames on the mound. Rodriguez picked up his second save of the year with three scoreless innings of relief.

 

The Crawdads will finish the season with a weeklong road trip, beginning with a three-game series in Lakewood, N.J., Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m.
