Starting a game on the right foot is a tremendous receipe for winning games. Well, the Cloudland (TN.) High football team did juat that on Friday night.
The Highlanders (1-0) scored in the first quarter on Zac Benfield's 54-yard run. That burst capped off a six-play, 80-yard drive that took more than three minutes (3:02 to be exact). And Cloudland made it stand up.
The Highlanders ran for 229 yards Friday night, and they controlled the clock---they held the ball for more than 30 minutes. Quarterback Austin Whitehea ran for a game-high 128 yards on 27 carries. He was also 4-4 passing for 56 yards.
The Vikings (0-1) struggled offensively. They only had 171 yards, and most of that came on the shoulders of Austin Phillips, who rushed for 100 yards on 16 carries. Phillips also made seven tackles, including six solos, on defense. Heath Austin led Avery Friday night with ten, including a tackle-for-loss.
Cloudland was 6-11 on third down conversions and they made their only fourth-down attempt. The Vikings, on the other hand were just 3-8 on third down (1-2 on fourth).
The Vikings take on McDowell at home next Friday night.
