A late rally couldn't save the Hickory Crawdads Thursday night in a 4-3 loss against the Augusta GreenJackets at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
Trailing 4-0, the Crawdads (7-5) pushed three runs across on four hits and an error to cut the deficit to 4-3. But the rally stalled when the Crawdads left the bases loaded. They left runners on at first and third in the seventh, and they left two runners on in scoring position in the ninth. The Crawdads stranded eight runners, including six in scoring position.
The loss also snapped Hickory's four-game winning streak, and the loss leaves the Crawdads five games behind first-place Hagerstown in the SAL's Northern Division. The Suns come to town for a weekend series starting Friday night. The Crawdads are also 5 1/2 games behind Greensboro in the wildcard race.
Greensboro knocked off Hagerstown 14-6 Thursday night.
Augusta built their lead, thanks to a four-run third inning, They scored four runs on five hits to take a 4-0 advantage. Losing pitcher Tyler Smith () was victimized by the GreenJackets. Smith settled down following his meltdown and finished with a season-high ten strikeouts during his five-inning stint.
The Hickory bullpen followed suit with Felix Carvallo and Patrick Kaminska combining to toss three shutout innings of relief to keep the 'Dads in the game.
Nick Urbanus kick-started Hickory's three-run uprising in the sixth with a leadoff single to left field. Luis Marte reached on a fielding error, and Michael De Leon got aboard with a base hit to right to load the bases with nobody out. Even Van Hoosier got the 'Dads on the board with a run-scoring fielder's choice, and Ronald Guzman came through with a two-run double inside the first base line.
Joe Jackson followed with a bloop single to left that put runners on the corners with one away. One out later, Travis Demeritte walked to re-load the bases with two outs, but the 'Jackets were able to escape the inning when Marcus Greene grounded out to third.
Augusta starting pitcher Robert Ramer (3-4) earned the win after allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits, with a walk, and four strikeouts over 5.1 innings. Jackets reliever Raymundo Montero picked up his fifth save of the year with a scoreless ninth inning.
Guzman was 1-4 with a two-run double; De Leon went 1-3 with a pair of walks; Urbanus was 1-2 with a walk. The Crawdads return home for their final home stand of the regular season against the Hagerstown Suns at 7:00 p.m.
