Tight end Collin Reed (Inman, S.C./Boiling Springs) has officially become the first member of Appalachian State University football’s 2015 class of newcomers, head coach Scott Satterfield announced on Thursday.

Reed, a senior at Boiling Springs (S.C.) H.S., signed a financial-aid agreement with Appalachian State earlier this month because he intends to graduate from high school in December and enroll at Appalachian in January. He is slated to participate in all team activities upon his arrival at App State, including the Mountaineers’ 2015 spring practices.

Rivals.com has rated Reed as the No. 1 high-school tight end in the state of South Carolina in 2014. He has hauled in 83 receptions for 1,590 yards and 17 touchdowns over the first three years of his prep career, including 32 catches for 680 yards and eight touchdowns as a sophomore in 2012 and 48 catches for 850 yards and eight touchdowns as a junior last fall. Under the tutelage of head coach Rick Tate, Reed earned all-region and all-area recognition in 2013.

He is also a two-year letterwinner in basketball and earned all-academic team honors on the hardwood this past season.

A two-star prospect according to Rivals.com and Scout.com, Reed chose Appalachian State over Army, Charlotte and Toledo, among others. He also drew interest from several ACC and SEC programs.

“It’s exciting to have Collin make his intention to attend Appalachian State official by signing his financial-aid agreement,” Satterfield said. “He’s a terrific student and, on the field, he’ll remind Mountaineer fans of (four-time all-Southern Conference honoree) Ben Jorden due to his outstanding hands and great size and speed. We’re looking forward to him joining us in January.”
