The Watauga High volleyball team came up short against North Surry in its season opener Tuesday night. The Greyhounds, a solid Class 2A program, down WHS (0-1) in three sets, 25-14, 25-20, 25-23 in Mount Airey, N.C.




Sarah Combs led the Pioneers with 18 assists and three kills; Sarah Petersen had eight kills and three blocks; Brynne Gould had eight kills; Sierra Hill had six kills and five blocks; Abby Hicks had eight digs; Makenzie Presnell had eight digs.


North Surry won the junior varsity match in a two-game sweep, 25-18, 25-20. Sophomores Tayler McCune and Savannah Rusher led WHS in the loss. McCune had eight kills and eight digs; Rusher had eight digs and eight assists. Freshman Grace Hagaman had ten digs; freshman Madie Darner five kills and five digs.


The Pioneers will play Lake Norman in their home opener tonight at Lentz-Eggers Gym beginning with the JV match at 5 p.m.; the varsity match will follow.



Ashe County Downs Pioneers, 3-2


The Ashe County High boys' soccer team captured its first win against Watauga Tuesday night with a 3-2 win in West Jefferson. The Huskies scored the game-winning goal at the 65-minute mark of the second half. Miquel Ramos scored the game winner.


Tucker Chasteen gave WHS (1-0) an early 1-0 lead at the 15-minute mark of the fisrt half, but the Huskies rallied and tied the game just before halftime. Trailing 2-1, Chase Palm tied things up for WHS as he scored, thanks to an assist from Dillion Hill. Jett Dhing picked up an assist on WHS' first goal. The Pioneers return home to play McDowell tonight.


The junior varsity match starts at 5 p.m.; the varsity match begins at 6:30 p.m. Ashe County defeated the WHS JVs, 3-0.
