The Hickory Crawdads scored five times in the first inning and never looked back in a 7-2 win against the Delmarva Shorebirds at L.P. Frans Stadium. The win earned Hickory (72-54 overall; 31-26, second half of the South Atlantic League season) a split in its four-game series with Delmarva. And the Crawdads picked up a game on

first-place Hagerstown. Lakewood beat the Suns 9-0 Sunday night, They find themselves five games off the lead in the SAL's Northern Division; they trail Greenswboro by 6 1/2 games in the wildcard race.

Nine men batted in Hickory's five-run first inning. The first-inning rally began with a double by Michael De Leon and a bunt single by Luis Marte. Ronald Guzman brought in the first run with an RBI single to left field; Zach Cone followed with a RBI double down the right field line, and Joe Jackson singled in a run with a base hit to left, giving Hickory a 3-0 lead. Kevin Torres made it 4-0 with a groundout out; Janluis Castro capped things off with a sacrifice fly to right field.

And that first-inning outburst provided more than enough support for Hickory pitchers David Ledbetter and Luis Ortiz, who combined to hold the Shorebirds to two runs on three hits with eight combined strikeouts. Ledbetter (6-6) got the win after tying a season high with six innings stint. He gave up a run on one hit with six strikeouts. Ortiz earned his first save of the year. He gave up a run on two hits with two strikeouts.\

Creede Simpson got Delmarva (62-64; 24-33) on the board with a solo home run in the second inning. But Kevin Torres added to Hickory's lead with a two-run shot in the bottom of the third. Drew Dosch closed out the scoring as he belted a solo home run for the Shorebirds in the seventh.

Torres led the Crawdads going 1-4 game which included his fourth home run of the year and three RBI. Cone finished the night going 2-3 with two doubles, two runs scored, an RBI, and a walk; Jackson ended the night 2-4 with a RBI and a run scored. The Crawdads have the off day. They begin a three-game series in Augusta against the GreenJackets Tuesday night.
