The Appalachian State University football team picked up a huge in-state selection as outside linebacker Akeen Davis of Thomasville High has made a verbal commitment to join the Mountaineers next fall.
Davis, rated a two-star recruit by 247 Sports, officially announced his choice on August 12. He is projected as an inside linebacker at the college level. He stands 6-foot-two and weighs in at 200 pounds. Davis was an All-Central Carolina Conference selection both his sophomore and junior years. And first-year coach Wes Mattera is counting on him to be a vocal leader on and off the field for the Bulldogs this season.
Davis had 13 offers in all. Among those were: Elon, Boston College, Charlotte, Ball State, Miami (Ohio), Georgia Southern and Old Dominion.
The Apps also received a commitment from outside linebacker Dezmin Reed from Atlanta, Ga., and Georgia Military Junior College in Milledgeville, Ga., on August 7. Reed, a running back at Chamblee Charter School in Georgia, is 6-2, 235, and he has 4.70 speed in the 40-yard dash, according to 247 Sports.
Reed has a two-star rating. He made 35 tackles last season, including 26 solos, and he also had six tackles-for-loss with a quarterback sack. Reed also had offers from Colorado, Marshall, South Alabama and Tennessee State.
