When you break it down, baseball is just a game of inches. The Hickory Crawdads found that out firsthand in a 1-0 loss Thursday night at L.P. Frans Stadium. Conor Bierfeldt of the Delmarva Shorebirds, who reached on an error leading off the seventh inning, scored the game's only run on a hit-and-run double by Austin Wynns

one out later. Bierfeldt slid into home just ahead of the relay throw to Crawdads catcher Joe Jackson for the game's only tally.

The Crawdads (70-53 overall; 29-25, second half of the South Atlantic League season), who are mired in a five game losing streak, only made three hits Thursday night. They also continued their downward slide in the standings. Hickory now finds itself six games behind Hagerstown for first place in the SAL's Northern Division. They're also 7 1/2 games behind Greensboro for the wildcard spot in the Northern Division.

Greensboro defeated Kannapolis 4-3 Thursday night; Lakewood blanked Hagerstown, 8-0. Thursday night's loss was also Hickory's first against Delmavra (61-62; 23-31) this season. The Crawdads are 7-1 against the Shorebirds this season.

Joe Monegro (0-1) suffered the loss. He gave up an unearned run on two hits with two strikeouts during his two-inning stint. Frank Lopez got the starting nod and had a no-decision after tossing five shutout frames on three hits, with seven strikeouts. Delmarva reliever Williams Louico (2-1) earned the win with two scoreless innings; Donnie Hart picked up his fourth save with a perfect ninth inning.

Evan Van Hoosier was 1-4; Ronald Guzman had a double in four trips, and Luis Marte was 1-3. The Crawdads will look to bounce back in game two of their four game series against the Shorebirds tonight at 7:00 p.m.
