Double Plays Derail 'Dads In Defeat PDF Print

What's that old cliche, "if it wasn't for bad luck, I wouldn't have any luck at all." That best describes the Hickory Crawdads and their recent slide. For the second night in a row, the Crawdads (70-51 overall; 29-23, second half of the South Atlantic League season) outhit the Charleston RiverDogs (60-62; 27-25), but they also

hit into three double plays and left seven men on base in a 3-2 loss Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park. The Crawdads, mired in a mini three-game losing streak, now find themselves 4 1/2 games behind first-place Hagerstown in the SAL's Northern Division. Hagerstown had its games at Delmarva rained out Tuesday night; Greensboro took advantage of the situation and swept Lakewood in a twi-night double-header to move within 1 1/2 games out of first place.

The 'Dads finished with 11 hits, but they also had three inning-ending double plays in the first, second and the fifth innings that squelched three excellent scoring chances. The Crawdads had two runners on and only one out in the first and second innings, but a double play derailed both of those opportunities.

Trailing 3-0, Hickory finally got on the board in the fifth when Jairo Beras doubled, moved to third one out later on a single by Nick Urbanus, and finally scored on a RBI single from Luis Marte to make the score 3-1. Michael De Leon followed with another single to load the bases with only one out, but Evan Van Hoosier grounded into an inning-ending double play to close out the frame.

The 'Dads scored again in the top of the eighth on a RBI single by Joe Jackson that made it 3-2 just before the rain began to fall and the tarp was pulled. Following a rain delay that lasted for more than hour, the game finally ended when Charleston reliever Eric Ruth shut down the Crawdads in the top of the ninth to earn his fifth save of the season.

David Ledbetter (5-6) after giving up three runs on six hits, with four walks, and six strikeouts over five innings. Luis Niebla (2-1) of Charleston got the win after allowing a run on seven hits, with one walk, and one strikeout during his five frames.

De Leon led Hickory offensively, going 3-4 with a run scored. Nick Urbanus was 2-3 with a triple; Ronald Guzman and Beras both went 1-4 with a double. The Crawdads wrap up this three game series with a mantinee at 12:05 p.m.
