Appalachian State University football wrapped up the first full week of fall camp with a 128-play intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday afternoon at Kidd Brewer Stadium. Appalachian State’s offense stood out during Saturday’s scrimmage, racking up 651 yards over the afternoon’s 128 snaps (5.1 yards per play) while not committing any turnovers. The 128 plays were split evenly between passes and runs — the Mountaineers amassed 532 yards on 46-of-64 passing and 119 yards on 64 rushes.

After allowing the offense to march 65 yards for a touchdown on the scrimmage’s opening series, the defense kept the offense off the board for the next six possessions, recording five three-and-outs along the way.

However, the offense regained momentum with a field goal on the eighth series of the afternoon and went on to control the final two-thirds of the scrimmage.

The offensive supremacy began with picking up first downs on four-consecutive series that started on its own one yard line. After the four mini-series from the one yard line, the offense proceeded to pick up at least 34 yards on each of the next four possessions, including two 65-yard touchdown drives and a 42-yard drive the resulted in a 40-yard field goal.

The offense then closed the afternoon by scoring on each of the final 12 series. While all of those possessions started at the defense’s 35 yard line or closer, the offense found the end zone 10 times and only had to settle for field goals twice.

Incumbent starting quarterback Kameron Bryant (Cary, N.C./Panther Creek) headlined the offensive outburst by completing 19-of-26 passes without an interception for 257 yards and three touchdowns. He also scored a touchdown on the ground.

Junior wide receiver Simms McElfresh (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Christian) led all receivers with 83 yards on five receptions. True freshman wideout Mykelti Armstrong (Gastonia, N.C./Forestview) caught a team-high six passes for 42 yards and fellow rookie Isaiah Lewis (Simpsonville, S.C./Hillcrest) caught two touchdown passes.

True freshman Jalin Moore (Shelby, N.C./Crest) was the afternoon’s leading rusher with 47 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries. He also scored on a 26-yard touchdown reception.

Junior place kicker Zach Matics (Jacksonville, N.C./Southwest-Onslow) was perfect on four field-goal attempts (41, 40, 51 and 34 yards).

Junior defensive end Ronald Blair (Greensboro, Ga./Greene County) led the Mountaineers with three tackles for loss, including two sacks. True freshman lineman Alanmicheal Harkness (Lithonia, Ga./Martin Luther King) also had three TFL, including a sack and sophomore nose tackle Darian Small (Hampton, Ga./Dutchtown) notched two sacks.
