Appalachian State University football conducted another outstanding practice in perfect weather conditions on Monday afternoon at Kidd Brewer Stadium. Like Sunday, Appalachian State worked out for two hours in helmets and shoulder pads with minimal contact and no tackling. Once again, temperatures were in the mid to high 70s with a light breeze.

Also like Sunday, which was the Mountaineers’ first practice of the year in shoulder pads, App State dedicated two of the final three periods of Monday’s session to 11-on-11 work.

Appalachian’s defense stood out for most of the early portions of the 11-on-11 drills. True freshman inside linebacker Devan Stringer (Gainesville, Ga./Gainesville) provided the biggest highlight when he dropped back and intercepted a pass that he returned for what might have been a touchdown in game conditions.

Other defensive highlights during 11-on-11 drills included pass breakups by Stringer, sophomore inside linebacker John Law (Atlanta, Ga./Grady) and junior safety Doug Middleton (Winston-Salem, N.C./Parkland), stops behind the line of scrimmage by Law, fellow first-team ILB Brandon McGowan (Suwanee, Ga./North Gwinnett) and outside linebacker Osvaldo Sombo (Matthews, N.C./Butler) and a sack by sophomore outside linebacker Kennan Gilchrist (Abbeville, S.C./Abbeville).

The offense gained back some momentum towards the end of the 11-on-11 drills. Starting quarterback Kameron Bryant (Cary, N.C./Panther Creek) began the rally with back-to-back nifty completions to junior wideout Bobo Beathard (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) and sophomore tight end Jacob McCann (McLeansville, N.C./Northeast Guilford). Redshirt freshman Taylor Lamb (Calhoun, Ga./Calhoun) followed by completing consecutive long passes to fellow redshirt freshman Dante Jones (Raleigh, N.C./Southwest Raleigh) and junior wideout Montez McGuire (Beech Island, S.C./North Augusta). A couple plays later, running back Ricky Fergerson (Fuquay-Varina, N.C./Fuquay-Varina) turned in the biggest running play of the afternoon with a long gain on a carry off right tackle.

Appalachian State straps on full pads for the first time this season on Tuesday. Tuesday’s practice begins at 4 p.m. and is open to the public at Kidd Brewer Stadium. Admission is FREE.
