Deglan's Late Homer Lifts 'Dads PDF Print

Kellin Deglan got Hickory's seven-game homestand off on the right foot with a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning that carried the Crawdads to a 3-2 win against the West Virginia Power Wednesday night at L.P. Frans Stadium. It was Deglan's 15th home run of the season.

Deglan's drive wiped out Erich Weiss' lead-off solo blast in the top of the eighth that tied the game. The win also leaves Hickory (59-43 overall; 18-15 second half of the South Atlantic League season) just three games behind first-place Greensboro in the Northern Division of the SAL. Asheville beat the Grasshoppers 10-6 Wednesday night.

And Hickory maintained its perfect record against West Virginia (35-66; 15-18) this season---the Crawdads are 8-0 against the Power this season.

Ricardo Rodriguez got the start and carried Hickory into the fifth inning. He gave up a run, unearned, on two hits. Patrick Kaminiska (1-0), who came on in relief in the sixth and coughed up Weiss' game-tying home run, got the win. And Weiss' blow was the only blemish against Kaminiska.

Jose Valdespina came on in the ninth and picked up his first save. He coughed up a hit in the ninth, but retired the side with no further damage.

The Crawdads grabbed a 2-1 lead with a pair of runs on four hits in the fourth inning. Deglan, Jairo Beras, and Joe Jackson had consecutive singles to start the inning. Travis Demeritte walked to force in the first run to tie the game at 1-1; Ronald Guzman followed with an RBI single to right field that plated Beras for a 2-1 lead. But Jackson was thrown out at the plate.

The Power took a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the second inning. A single by Reese McGuire, a throwing error by Rodriguez, and a sacrifice fly by Kawika Emsley-Pai produced West Virginia's first tally.

Deglan finished the game going 2-4 with his game-winning home run; Demeriite went 1-2 with a pair of walks and an RBI. The Crawdads will play the Power tonight in game two of the three game series at 7:00 p.m.
