Josh Wineberg, a junior from West Jefferson, N.C., was among nine Western Carolina University players to earn preseason all-Southern Conference honors on Wednesday in Spartanburg, S.C., on Media Day.

Wineberg returns as one of the most experienced offensive linemen for the Catamounts. Through his first two seasons, he has started all 22 games of his career, missing just one contest.

Wineberg was named the 2011 Mountain Valley 1A-2A Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year after recording 75 tackles, including 19 for loss and six quarterback sacks his senior year at Ashe County High School. He also had four pass break-ups, forced two fumbles and blocked three kicks.

Wineberg earned all-MVAC honors both on offense and defense as a senior, leading Ashe County to the school's ninth-consecutive state playoff berth. He was named all-Northwestern Region on offensive and defensive line - the only player to do so in the region by the Winston-Salem Journal, and he led the region in sacks .

He was a three-time all-conference selection, amassing over 279 career tackles . Wineberg was a two-sport athlete at Ashe County, adding an individual conference championship in wrestling, and a Class 2A state title his senior year.

Wineberg earned all-conference honors twice during his prep career, and he was also a two-time state qualifier. He won the title in the heavyweight division and posted a 44-1 record his senior year, which included a 40-match winning streak. Wineberg was 136-18 during his career with the Huskies.

Team-wise, Western Carolina was picked to finish fifth in both the coaches and media polls. The Catamounts return 20 starters for 2014, which marks the third year under head coach Mark Speir. Chattanooga was the preseason favorite to win the SoCon title.
