The Hickory Crawdads stumbled mightily on Tuesday night. They were held to three hits in a 7-0 loss to the Lakewood BlueClaws at L.P. Frans Stadium.  It's the fourth time Hickory (56-39 overall; 15-11 second half of the South Atlantic League season) has been shutout this season. Winning pitcher Yoel Mecias and two

relievers combined on the shutout. The 'Dads had a pair of hits in the first inning, but their bats went dormant after that. Kellin Deglan finally snapped the drought with a one-out double in the ninth inning.

Losing pitcher Tyler Smith (4-3) struck out the side in the first inning, but it went all downhill from there. The BlueClaws (36-59; 9-17) broke through with a run in the top of the second.

Right fielder Dylan Cozens lined the first pitch of the inning over the left field wall for a solo home run and a 1-0 lead. The advantage doubled with another run in the fourth. Third baseman Mitch Walding came through with a run-scoring double.

Cozens belted his second home run of the game in the top of the sixth; Mitch Walding had an RBI double in the eighth, giving Lakewood a 4-0 lead. The BlueClaws broke the game open in the top of the ninth, scoring three runs on three hits against Hickory reliever Jose Valdespina.

Kellin Deglan was 1-3 with a double in the loss. Cozens paced the BlueClaws going 4-5 with two home runs and three RBI; Walding was 3-5 with three doubles and two RBI.

Mecias (1-0) earned the win in his first start of the season for Lakewood. The left-hander tossed five shutout innings. He scattered two hits, walked three, and struck out seven. Smith took the loss. He allowed three runs on seven hits with five strikeouts in 5.1 innings.

Hickory will try to bounce back against Lakewood today in game two of their three game series. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 noon.
