The Hickory Crawdads, who were one of the hottest teams in minor-league baseball last week, have fallen off their course. They find themselves mired in a five-game losing streak following Tuesday's 16-8 loss to the Lexington Legends at L.P. Frans Stadium.
What hurts most is the fact that the 'Dads (54-35 overall; 13-7 second half of the South Atlantic League season) blew a 5-0, first-inning lead. The Hickory pitching staff allowed a season-high 19 hits in the loss. The loss is also the second-straight series loss for a team that hadn't lost a series in two months prior to this current home stand.
Kellin Delgan, with a two-run homer---his 13th of the year, and a run-scoring double by Ronald Guzman highlighted the frame. But the lead was short-lived.
The Legends (37-53; 8-12) responded by scoring eight runs of their own in the top of the second. They sent 13 men to the plate. Starting pitcher and losing pitcher Akeem Bostick (5-4) was knocked out of the game. Bostick coughed up a season-high eight runs on seven hits with three walks over 1.2 innings.
Evan Van Hooiser led off the bottom of the second with a solo home run, cutting the deficit to 8-6. The Crawdads had a chaNce to regain the lead in the third, but they left the bases loaded.
And as the old cliche' goes, one man's loss is another man's gain. And the Legends did just that. They scored three runs in the fourth and four in the sixth for a 15-6 advantage.
Third baseman Mauricio Ramos led the Legends going 5-6 with his fifth home run of the year, two RBI and five runs scored. Deglan paced the Hickory offense with a 2-5 night with two RBIs and a double. Van Hoosier was 2-5 with a home run and two runs scored; Joe Jackson went 2-5 with an RBI; Guzman was 2-3, with two doubles and an RBI.
The Crawdads will try to snap their skid Wednesday night against the Legends at 7 p.m.
