It took extra time to decide Tuesday's Sweet 16 match between the United States and Belgium in Salvador, Brazil in the FIFA World Cup. Belgium prevailed 2-1. With the win, Belgium advances to the quarterfinals.
They will play Argentina Saturday. Argentina adavnced by beating Switzerland 1-0 in Tuesday's opening match. The Americans suffered their second consecutive loss in the Sweet 16. They've reached the Sweet 16 five times. The Americans reached the semifinals in 1930; they made it to the quarterfinals in 2002.
Romelu Lukaku and Kevin De Bruyne scored in extra time to give Belgium a 2-0 lead. De Bruyne showed a great deal of patience on his goal in the 93rd minute. He took a feed inside the box from Romelu Lukaku and beat USA goalkeeper Tim Howard on a low shot that found its way inside the far post. Lukaku scored 12 minutes later for a 2-0 lead.
The USA finally got on the board in the second extra session. Nineteen-year-old Julian Green scored for the Americans in the 107th minute. The Americans had numerous chances to tie the game, but came away empty.
Belgium keeper Courtois make a huge save on Clint Dempsey at point-blank range in the 114th minute. Chris Wondolowski put one over the cross bar from in close eight seconds into the first extra session.
Despite the loss, Howard was outstanding in goal. He made 16 saves, 12 in regulation time. That's the most saves made by a goalkeeper at the World Cup since 1966.
The game was briefly delayed when a man ran onto the field in the 16th minute and had to be escorted off.
