A pair of High country natives were recognized at the state championships this spring. Bobby Dunnigan, a umpire in the region for a number of years, was selected as one of four umpires assigned to the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 2A state championship series between Bunker Hill and Midway May at UNC-

Greensboro, June 6-7.

Joining Dunnigan at the state championships this season is former Ashe County High soccer player Michael Graybeal. Graybeal, who played soccer for the Huskies and graduated from Ashe County in 2006, was named one of four officials at the NCHSAA Class 2A girls' state championship game between West Stokes and Washington at Dail Soccer Field on the campus on North Carolina State University May 30. Graybeal was an assistant ref in the game, meaning he patrolled one of the sidelines for 80 minutes.
