Former Appalachian State University defensive back and Winston-Salem, N.C., native Ed Gainey has been released by the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League.

Ironically, Gainey, who was going into his third season as a member of the Als, signed a three-year contract with Montreal back in January. He was considered a special-teams ace by the Als. He made eight stops on special teams last season, and he posted a career high 13 stops on defense. He also blocked a punt and returned it 38 yards for a touchdown last year against the Calgary Stampeders in week three.

He almost scored again Sept. 8 against the Toronto Argonauts. He scooped up a forced fumble by teammate Bear Woods on Toronto punter Noel Prefontaine before running it back 33 yards to the Argos one-yard line to set up a touchdown on the following play.

According to General Manager Jim Popp last January, Gainey brought a physical presence to the defense and special teams. The Als had great hopes about his continued development, and expected him to be a starter this season.

Defensive end Ameet Pall, who played at Wofford College, was added to the team's one-game injuried list.
