Pitcher Greg Holland of the Kansas City Royals notched his 20th save in 21 opportunities this season with a perfect ninth inning against the White Sox Sunday afternoon at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago.
Holland, who played at McDowell High School and at the Western Carolina University, is in his fifth Major League season. He's coming off his best season in the majors in 2013. He became the Royals full-time closer and converted 47 of 50 save Opportunities. On September 26, 2013, Holland set the Royals single season saves record with his 46th save in a 3-2 win over the White Sox, surpassed the late Dan Quisenberry and Jeff Montgomery who both had 45 save seasons.
Holland was chosen by the Royals in the tenth round of the MLB Amatuer Draft in 2007. Holland played in his first all-star game last season, and he is also a two-time Delivery Man of the Month winner (July 2013, September 2013). That award goes to the best relief pitcher in baseball.
Holland is 0-1 this season with 20 saves and a 1.35 earned-run-average. He has 107 career saves.
