Crawdads Red Hot At All-Star Break PDF Print

The Hickory Crawdads concluded the first half of the South Atlantic League season with an exclamation point Sunday afternoon. The 'Dads pounded out a season-high 19 hits in a 14-4 win against the Lakewood BlueClaws at FirstEnergy Park.

 

 

 

A Crawdads (41-28) have won 15 of 16 going into the break. And it's also the first time Hickory has won 41 games in the first half of the season since becoming a Texas Rangers affiliate in 2009.

 

Infielder Janluis Castro led the attack with a 5-6 performance, including his first home run of the year, two RBI, and three runs scored. Ryan Cordell was 4-6 with two RBI and two runs scored; Jairo Beras went 3-4 with his first home run of the year. Castro got things started with an RBI single in the second inning; an RBI double by Ronald Guzman and a RBI groundout by Travis Demeritte in the third plated two more runs for a 3-0 lead; Castro's solo home run, Michael De Leon's run-scoring single and a sacrifice fly by Nomar Mazara in the fourth gave Hickory a 6-0 lead. The Crawdads put Lakewood (27-42) out of its misery with a four-run fifth inning.

 

Starting pitcher Ricardo Rodriguez (4-1) got the win with five shutout innings. He scattered three hits, walked two with a season-high six strikeouts. The Crawdads will take a three-day break for the 55th Annual South Atlantic League All-Star Game that will be played Tuesday night at L.P. Frans STadium in Hickory. The 'Dads will start the second half of the schedule Thursday night with a road game against the Rome Braves.
