Ashley Named To East-West All-Star Game PDF Print
Written by Mike Kelly

Ashe County High senior Cullen Ashley will play in the East-West Senior All-Star football game at Greensboro-Grimsley on Wednesday, July 23 at 8 p.m. at Jamison Stadium. Ashley is the first player from the High Country to play in the East-West game since 2012, when Alex Fox of Watauga and Alex Villanueva of Avery played

for the West.

Ashley, who also played basketball for the Huskies, will be joined by defensive back Dylan Dula of Wilkes Central and offensive lineman Jonathan Minton of Hibriten. Ashley is the first football player from Ashe County to play in the all-star game, and the second athlete from ACHS to play in one of the East-West All-Star Games. Zeb Richardson took part in the all-star basketball game in 2012.

Keith Phillips of the Huskies will be an assistant coach for the West. Phillips will be joined by former Wilkes Central coach Jeremy Funderburk. The West will be coached by Brett Chappell of Pisgah. Richard Bailey of Scotland County will coach the East. This is the 66th meeting. The West owns a 38-26-1 lead in the series. The West won last year's game 14-7 at A.J. Simeon Stadium in High Point. The game was played in High Point last summer because of renovations being made at Jamison Stadium last summer.

David Burgess of Freedom was named the Most Valuable Player on Offense last year. He scored a pair of touchdowns, including the game winner on a 79-yard run with 5:13 left to play.
