The Hickory Crawdads hit into four double plays Friday night in a 7-6 loss against the Greenville Drive at Fluor Field. The Crawdads (26-27) left seven runners on base and they were 1-8 with runners in scoring position. Hickory also left the tying run on base in the sixth and seventh innings. Trailing 7-5 in the top of the ninth,
Hickory scored a run and had the tying and go ahead runs on base with two outs. But Nomar Mazara, who sturggled going 0-5 on the night, grounded out to end the game.
It was a disappointing loss for the Crawdads, who let a 5-1 lead get away. Trailing 1-0 in the top of the fifth, the 'Dads sent ten men to the plate. Travis Demeritte led the way with a two-run homer; Kellin Deglan scored on a wild pitch and the Crawdads received a huge break later in the inning when first baseman Jantzen Witte dropped what would have been an inning ending popup with the bases loaded, allowing two more runs to score.
But Greenville (27-26) answered right back with a five-run inning of its own in the bottom of the fifth. Five hits and a walk chased losing pitcher Akeem Bostick (2-3) to re-take the lead, 6-5. Greenville pushed its advantage to 7-5 in the seventh, taking advantage of four walks and a sacrifice fly to plate an insurance run.
The 'Dads staged their final rally in the top of the ninth. Joe Jackson plated Ryan Cordell with an RBI single to make it, 7-6. Evan Van Hoosier moved to second base with the potential tying run. But Mazara's ground out ended the rally.
Jackson paced the Hickory hitters going 3-4 with a triple and an RBI. Demeritte ended the night going 2-4 with his tenth home run of the year. Vickerson walked three times and scored a run.
Greenville reliever Raynel Velette (4-0) earned the win with 3.1 scoreless innings pitched; Bostick (2-3) took the loss after giving up six runs on seven hits over his 4.2 innings on the mound. Mike Adams of the Drive picked up his third save of the year despite giving up a run in the ninth.
The 'Dads and the Drive (27-26) meet up again Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. in game three of their four game series.
