Left fielder Ryan Cordell of the Hickory Crawdads took matters into his own hands Saturday night. Cordell went 4-4 with two runs-batted-in to lead the 'Dads to a 7-3 win over the visiting Charleston RiverDogs at L.P. Fans Stadium.
Cordell became the first Crawdad this season to record a four-hit game as he ended the night with a triple, a double, and two singles, with three runs scored. The 6-foot-4 right-handed hitter fell just a home run shy of becoming the first Crawdads t player ever to hit for the cycle.
The Crawdads (23-24) also put together their sixth straight game with at least nine team hit.
Cordell got things rolling with a double in the second inning. He eventually scored on Kellin Deglan's sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead. Cordell added to the lead with a two-run triple in the third.
Hickory increased its lead with a three-run fifth inning. A one-out walk to Nomar Mazara and a single by Cordell started the rally. Ronald Guzman followed with a two-run double to left field before he scored on a RBI single to right by Deglan.
Cordell scored Hickory's final run in the bottom of the seventh. He collected his fourth hit of the game on a single up the middle and later scored on a RBI groundout by Deglan for a 7-1 Hickory lead. Charleston (24-23) plated two more runs in the eighth on a 2-run homer by Aaron Judge; they loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth, but Crawdads' reliever Josh McElwee got Tyler Wade to fly out to end the game.
The offensive production supported a solid start from pitcher Chad Bell (1-0), who earned the win after tossing five shutout innings. He scattered five hits, with a walk, and two strikeouts in his second rehab start with the 'Dads. The win is the seventh in the last ten games for the Crawdads, who will now go for their third straight series win in their final game against the RiverDogs Sunday at 5:00 pm.
