Just like that, the Fred T. Foard High girls' basketball team was left without a head coach when Ernie Wilson announced on Wednesday that he will not return next season.
Wilson is a former Foard player who has also worked closely with the boys program at the junior varsity level. Wilson took over at Foard shortly after Brad Mangum, who coached there two seasons, resigned to accept an opening head varsity girls basketball job at Alexander Central.
After going 14-12 and 18-9 under Mangum and extending their string of consecutive state playoff appearances to four, the Tigers went 1-13 in the Northwestern 3A-4A Conference last season and tied for sixth place. They were 2-21 overall. The Tigers finished the season losing 12 in a row.
Foard will be looking for its eighth head girls coach in nearly 30 years, but its third since Wendy Price left the job in 2010-11. Price led the Tigers for 11 seasons that included nine state playoff appearances, one conference title and a share of another league title, three West 3A Regional appearances and a state runner-up finish in 2005-2006.
