Hickman Named New Assistant Coach PDF Print

Frank Hickman, who had a very decorated wrestling career, has been named the new Appalachian State University wrestling assistant coach, head coach JohnMark Bentley announced on Friday.

 

 

 

“Frank has a tremendous work ethic and a special set of skills that will help with recruiting and promoting Appalachian wresting,” Bentley said.

 

A North Carolina native, Hickman went to E.A Laney High School in Wilmington. During his senior campaign at E.A. Laney, Hickman posted a 57-5 record and saw top-five finishes in the state championships three times in his four years there. He was recruited and went to wrestle for the Huskies of Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania.

 

After redshirting one year at Bloomsburg, Hickman wrestled the 141, 149 and 157-pound weight classes, winning 103 matches in his career. In his redshirt-sophomore year, Hickman placed second at the Eastern Wrestling League Conference Tournament and was named an NCAA Division I national qualifier for the first time in his career.

 

Hickman used the momentum from his 2011-12 season to find success his junior year. Placing second at the EWL conference tournament, Hickman went on to wrestle impressive matches at the Division 1 national tournament. He advanced to the quarterfinals of the tournament after picking up a first-round pin and a decision over the ninth-seeded wrestler. Hickman was ranked 16th in the nation at the 157-pound weight class according to the final NCAA Division I RPI rankings.

 

In his final season, he won the EWL title at 157, and qualified for his third national tournament. He wrestled to the Round of 12 before ending his collegiate career.

 

For his efforts on the mats, Hickman earned the Bloomsburg Upperclassman Male Athlete of the Year Award in 2012 and 2013. He earned a most outstanding wrestler award in 2011 at the Pennsylvania State Athletics Conference tournament, a tournament that he was named champion twice. He also was a runner-up at the ASICS FILA national tournament in 2012.

 

Hickman comes to Appalachian being named the No. 3 salesman in the southeast, working for Hendrick Mazda in Buford, Ga. and the being the assistant coach at the Compound Wresting Club in 2013-14, a club that attracts high school state placers, high school state champions and national collegiate placers.
