The Hickory Crawdads survived a mid-game offensive drought, a Charleston rally, and even a power outage at the ballpark Wednesday night before they
rallyied for two runs in the top of the ninth innings to beat the Riverdogs 5-3 at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park.
Jairo Beras got things going in the top of the ninth with a single to start the innings. He moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Janluis Castro, and he took third on a passed ball. That's when Michael De Leon came through with a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Beras with the go-ahead run.
The 'Dads (17-21) tacked on another run when Evan Van Hoosier lined a solo home run just inside the right field foul pole that gave Hickory an insurance run and a two-run lead.
Hickory reliever Cody Kendall (3-2) made it stand up. He tossed 3.1 shutout innings to get the win. Omar Luis (1-1) of Charleston (20-18) suffered the loss after allowing the two runs in the ninth.
Kelvin Vasquez got the start lasting 5.2 innings. He gave up three runs on five hits with two walks and a season-high eight strikeouts.
Travis Demeritte led the 'Dads bats going 2-3 with his team-leading seventh home run of the year. He also had two RBI. Van Hoosier went 2-5 with a homer; Ronald Guzman was 1-4 with an RBI, a stolen base, and a run scored.
The Crawdads and the RiverDogs match up tonight at 7:05 pm in game two of their three-game series.
