Six Lees-McRae Track & Field student-athletes were named to the Division II Southeast All-Region Track & Field team for their 2014 success, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced late Monday evening.
Dual athlete Meagan Thorton (Millville, N.J.) received recognition in 100-meter and 400-meter hurdles. The junior claimed second at the Conference Carolinas Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.97. She followed up with a fourth-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles at 15.16 seconds. Thorton shined in the 800-meter run with a second-place finish at the Lenoir-Rhyne PowerSox Invitational with a time of 2:30.78.
Senior Evan Webb (Salisbury, N.C.) dominated competition in pole vault during the Spring 2014 season by claiming five individual titles. He sailed to a gold medal at the CC Outdoor T & F Championship when he cleared 4.90 meters. He matched that height at the PowerSox Invitational March 22. Webb impressed with a team-best heave of 45.01 meters in the javelin at the High Point VertKlasse Meet April 4. He was named the Conference Carolinas Outdoor Mens Field Athlete of the Year last week.
Junior field athlete Ryan Trask garnered recognition after capturing the javelin title at the conference championships when he turned in a throw of 48.26 meters. Trask notched a fifth-place finish at the Aggie Invitational April 12 with a throw of 46.90 meters.
Senior Kortnie Curry (Lexington, N.C.) concluded the season with consecutive victories in the high jump. Curry jumped a season-high 1.63 meters at the Charlotte Invitational before capturing the conference title a week later with a height of 1.60 meters.
Fellow high jumper MeKayla Boswell (Mocksville, N.C.) earned a spot on the squad after finishing second at the conference championship with a height of 1.60 meters. Boswell won the event at the PowerSox Invitational with a leap of 1.62 meters.
