Watson One Shot Off Lead At States PDF Print

Reilly Erhardt of Kernersville-Bishop McGuinness holds a one-shot lead in the individual standings, as he fired a one-under par 71 and enters the final round of the 17th annual North Carolina High School

Athletic Association Class 1A boys' state golf championships at Whispering Pines Country Club in Whispering Pines, N.C.

 

 

Chance Watson of Avery and Tanner Owen of Bishop McGuinness, the defending individual champion, are one shot off the lead with an even-par, 72. . A trio of golfers---Trevor Beckham of Pine Lake Prep, Nick Adams of Rosewood and McKenzie Barringer of Durham Voyager Academy---with a two-over par, 74.

 

Kernersville-Bishop McGuinness moved a step closer to its fourth consecutive state team championship firing a 301 in Monday's opening round. Bishop McGuinness has a 23-shot lead over East Surry (324) in the team standings, with Pine Lake Prep of Mooresville third (327), 26 shots off the pace. Avery is fourth with a 333, 32 shots back. The best four of six individual scores count toward the team total.

 

In Class 3A, at the Foxfire Village Golf Course in Jackson, N.C., Gastonia-Forestview, with a 301, owns a one-shot lead on Burlington-Williams after the opening round of the state tournament. St. Stephens is sixth with a 318, 17 shots off the lead.

 

Austin Harrill of Hickory is tied for 14th with a four-over par 76; Austin Russell of St. Stephens is tied for 18th with a 78. Alex Simpson of Weddington is the first-round leader with a 69. He owns a three shot lead on the rest of the field.

 

In Class 4A, at the Carolina Trace Country Club in Sanford, N.C., Raleigh-Broughton owns the first-round lead with a 292. Southern Pines-Pinecrest is five shots back with a 297.

 

Patrick Cover of Cornelius-Hoigh is the first round leader with a four-under par 68. He leads Preyer Fountain of Broughton by three shots. Fountain had a 71 in the first round. Watauga High junior Austin Northern is tied for 71st with a 17-over-par 89.

 

The final round for all classes will be played Tuesday. In Class 1A, Avery will tee off on hole No.10 Tuesday morning----Martin Lehmann tees off at 9:20 a.m., Greyson Stafford at 9:30 a.m., Austin Daniels at 9:40 a.m., Jacob Waldropp at 9:50 a.m., Daniel Childress at 10 a.m., Chance Watson at 10:10 a.m.

 

In Class 4A, Austin Northern of WHS tees off on hole No.10 at 8 a.m.
