"Jones' Boys" Drop 'Dads, 9-4 PDF Print

Christian Jones of the Augusta Greenjackets had a no-hitter for seven innings and Ryder Jones, who played at Watauga High last spring, hit his first home run of the year as the 'Jackets (16-20) downed the Hickory Crawdads 9-4 at L.P. Frans Stadium.

 

 

 

Jones, who lost his perfect game with a walk to Travis Demeritte in the third inning, lost his no-hitter when right fielder Ryan Cordell lined a single to left field. That hit ignited Hickory's (15-20) offense as well.

 

The Crawdads produced three straight hits and scored three runs in the inning. But Jones regrouped and finished the game with three runs allowed, one earned, on three hits, with a walk, and a season-high seven strikeouts over 7.1 innings.

 

Crawdads starter Cole Wiper, who played collegiately with Jones at the University of Oregon, suffered the loss. Augusta broke through with a run in the third. A pair of two-out hits led to Augusta's first run of the game. The Greenjackets added another run in the fourth before they broke the game open with five runs in the fifth.s The 'Jackets also hit two home runs during the rally and led, 7-0.

 

Demeritte had a run-scoring single for Hickory in the eighth and two more runs scored on a two-base error by Augusta right fielder Tyler Horan. Cordell homer in the ninth. Cordell paced Hickory going 2-4 with his first home run of the year. Demeritte was 1-2 with an RBI and a walk. Jones paced Augusta going 2-5.

 

The teams will meet up again for game three of their four-game series Monday night at 6:00 pm.
