Tyler Moore improved to 9-4 on the season and he tossed his fifth complete game of the year as the Appalachian State University baseball team defeated Samford 6-3 Saturday at J.L. Griffin Field.




Moore tossed seven scoreless innings, and he kept the Bulldogs hitless until the fifth. Samford (30-22, 13-10 SoCon) made things interesting in the eighth, scoring three times to pull within two at 5-3. But the Mountaineers scored an insurance run in the ninth to put the contest out of reach.


A two-out single by Alex Leach gave Appalachian (17-30, 10-12 SoCon) a 1-0 first-inning lead. Brian Bauk drove in Apps second run with an RBI single in the fourth. Tyler Zupcic was 2-3 with two runs scored and three RBI. He belted a two-run homer in the fifth and he drove in another run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh.


T.J. Dixon highlighted Samford's three-run rally in the eighth with a two-run single. singled to bring both runs home. An error by Preston Troutman allowed Drew McWhorter to drive in the Samford's third run of the inning.


Moore retired the last five batters he faced to secure the win for Appalachian, evening the series at a win apiece. Leach went 3-4 with two RBI and a walk; Pierson walked three times and scored three runs.


The Mountaineers will look to win the series Sunday as they take on Samford in Birmingham, Ala. at 2 p.m.
