The Hagerstown Suns (23-7, the best record in the South Atlantic League) broke the game open with two runs in the top of the eighth inning and defeated the Hickory Crawdads 4-2 Wednesday night at L.P. Fran Stadium.

Akeem Bostick pitched well enough to win, but the Crawdads (14-16) were held to just one hit through the seventh inning. Asutin Voth of the Suns, who picked up his first win of the year, was responsible for that. He allowed just two base runners with seven strikeouts before he left the game in the eighth with a 1-0 lead. Bostick, who suffered his second loss of the year, gave up a run on six hits with four strikeouts, but he also walked four.

Leading 1-0, the Suns picked up a pair of insurance runs against relief pitcher Tyelr Smith in the top of the eighth, but the 'Dads retaliated in the bottom of the frame, thanks to run-scoring double by Evan Van Hoosier that made it, 3-1. The rally could have been bigger, but the Crawdads left the bases loaded.

The Suns extended their lead with an unearned run in the top of the ninth. The 'Dads picked up an unearned run of their own in the bottom of the ninth, but they left runners on second and third when Travis Demeritte struck out to end the game. The Crawdads stranded five runners, four in scoring position in the eighth-and-ninth inning combined,. Justin Thomas picked up his first save of the year after escaping the ninth inning jam.

Nomar Mazara had his first three-hit game of the season in the loss. He was 3-4 with a run scored. Ryan Cordell was 1-3 with a walk and a run scored; Van Hoosier went 1-3 with an RBI double and a walk.

The teams will play a twi-night doubleheader at L.P. Fran Stadium today beginning at 4:00 pm.
