The Watauga High boys' tennis team saw its season come to an end on Friday at the NCHSAA Class 4A Western Regional at Cornelius-Hough.




Dristen Trate of the Pioneers was eliminated in the opening round by Tyler Armato of Huntersville-Hopewell in three sets, 4-6, 7-6, 6-1; the doubles team of Will Spinetto and Josh Lampkins of the Pioneers were eliminated by a pair of guys that beat them in the first-round of the dual-team state tournament on Thursday in Boone.


Jason Horecky and Coleman Baker of Asheville-Roberson (they are a combined 23-1 in singles play) defeated Spinetto and Lampkins in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, in Friday's opening round. The Rams defeated WHS 5-3 on Thursday in duals at the WHS Tennis Courts. The Pioneers finished the dual season with a 10-3 record and Northwestern 3A-4A Conference champions.


Horecky and Baker qualified for the state tournament as they marched their way into the semifinals by knocking off Sean Nestor and Lance Clementi of Charlotte Catholic in the second round.


The top four finishers in singles and doubles play advance to the state tournament.  The state championships will be at the Millbrook Exchange Center in Raleigh, N.C., May 8-9.
