After scoring 21 runs in their last two games, the Hickory Crawdads were held in check Sunday night by Greensboro pitcher Ryan Newell, who scattered three hits in a 3-0 win at L.P. Frans Stadium.
The 22-year-old Newell (2-2) became the first starting pitcher in the South Atlantic League this season to flirt with a complete game. Newell went 8.1 innings and gave up a walk and stuck out eight.
Cole Wiper (2-2), who kept his team in the game with six stellar innings of his own, suffered the loss. The right-hander allowed an unearned run on two hits, with two walks, and six strikeouts.
Leading 1-0, the Grasshoppers added some insurance on Chad Wallach's home run in the seventh inning; a throwing error by Hickory catcher Kevin Torres led to another run in the ninth.
The Crawdads made five hits on the night, and they left five men on base. Nomar Mazara ended the night going 2-4 with two doubles; Nick Vickerson went 1-3 with a double and a walk.
With the loss the Crawdads (11-12) and Grasshopppers (12-11) split their 4-game series at two games apiece. The 'Dads will be off on Monday as they travel to Hagerstown to start a 3-game series with the first place Suns. First pitch on Tuesday is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
