Cleveland, Curry Claim Titles At Track Championships PDF Print

Lees-McRae senior Kortnie Curry and junior Rachelle Cleveland claimed individual titles in their respective field events on the first day of the Conference Carolinas Outdoor Track & Field Championships Friday afternoon in Banner Elk, N.C.



Curry (Lexington, N.C.) continued her recent hot stretch by winning the high jump contest over fellow Bobcat Mekayla Boswell (Mocksville, N.C.). Both contestants cleared 1.60 meters. Not to be out done, senior Persephanie McRae (Brooklyn, N.Y.) finished fourth in the competition with a height of 1.50 meters.


Cleveland (Moyock, N.C.) crushed her competition in the javelin and claimed gold with a heave of 34.75 meters. Her next closest competitor was 1.15 meters behind. Teammate Jessica Hattabaugh (Hamilton, Mass.) gave Coach Ley Fletcher’s squad two points with a fifth-place finish with a distance of 26.78 meters.


Cleveland claimed eighth in the hammer throw with a toss of 29.96 meters.


The duo of Meagan Thorton (Millville, N.J.) and Erin Bingham (Jefferson, N.C.) delighted the home crowd when they automatically qualified for the women’s 100-meter hurdles by winning their respective heats. Thorton used a blistering time of 14.95 seconds while Bingham finished .01 seconds behind at 14.96.


King (64) currently leads the women’s standings while LMC is second (33) and Limestone is third (32). Mount Olive (27) and Barton (10) round out the top five while North Greenville (8) sits sixth and Belmont Abbey and Converse (6) are tied for seventh.


The shot put will open up action tomorrow on the women’s side at 11:30 a.m. at Tate Field in Banner Elk, N.C.



Trask, Mackey Win Gold At Track Championships



Lees-McRae junior Ryan Trask and senior Devan Mackey earned individual titles in their respective field events on day one of the Conference Carolinas Outdoor Track & Field Championships Friday afternoon in Banner Elk, N.C.


Trask (Cobleskill, N.Y.) was one of three Bobcats to finish in the top 10 of the javelin while winning the contest with a throw of 48.26 meters, besting his closest competitor by 3.50 meters. Dual athlete Evan Webb (Salisbury, N.C.) placed fifth with a distance of 38.76 meters while Joshua Godwin (Pleasant Grove, N.C.) grabbed seventh at 37.84 meters.


Senior Mackey (Hickory, N.C.) impressed by winning the hammer throw with a distance of 41.02 meters while Godwin earned his second top-10 of the day by finishing ninth with a distance of 30.35 meters.


Junior Joshua Soto (Aiken, S.C.) qualified for the finals of the men’s 100-meter dash when he notched the fifth-best time of 11.15 seconds. He will run his final at 3 p.m. on Saturday.


LMC is currently fourth with 22 points while Mount Olive holds a healthy 39 point lead over North Greenville. Belmont Abbey is third with 25 points and Limestone (15) and King (13) are fifth and sixth, respectively.


The men’s long jump will open up action at 11:30 a.m. Saturday afternoon at Tate Field in Banner Elk, N.C.
