Catawba Outlasts Lenoir-Rhyne, 6-3, In 16 Innings PDF Print

The Catawba Softball Team (25-19) pulled out a 6-3 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne (38-12) in 16 innings Thursday night in the quarterfinal round of the 2014 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament at Neely Field.




The Indians, seeded eighth in the tournament, broke a 3-3 tie with three runs in the top of the 16th inning en route to the upset of the top-seeded Bears.


Catawba with face fourth-seeded Tusculum (31-22) on Friday at 12:30 p.m., while Lenoir-Rhyne takes on No. 5 Lincoln Memorial (26-16) in an elimination game on Friday morning at 10:00 a.m., at Middlesboro (Ky.) High School.


The Bears are ranked No. 12 in NCAA Division II and fourth in the region this week.


Catawba's Carley Tysinger (Lexington, N.C.) set a new NCAA Division II single-game record for strikeouts with 27 while Taylor Adams (Smithfield, N.C.) came through with the game-winning, two-run single in the top of the 16th inning for the Indians.


Lenoir-Rhyne rallied from a three-run deficit to force extra innings after senior shortstop Jody Mizelle (Colerain, N.C.) crossed the plate on a wild pitch in the seventh inning.


Mizelle finished with four hits including a triple while freshman first baseman Sydney Landreth (Disputanta, Va.) and sophomore outfielder Lauren Elder (Taylorsville, N.C.) added three hits each despite the loss.


On the mound, Catawba's Tysinger (18-9) earned the win while sophomore Maryann Hoskins (Havelock, N.C.) fell to 19-8 after suffering the loss. L-R sophomore Brandi Hole (Sandy Ridge, N.C.) pitched over 10 innings in relief and allowed just one earned run with seven strikeouts.
