Veteran official Joe Tauber has been hired as the Southern Conference’s new coordinator of wrestling officials, SoCon Commissioner John Iamarino announced Thursday. Tauber will assume his duties May 1.

In the newly created role, Tauber will be responsible for assigning, mentoring and evaluating officials within the league, as well as identifying new officials to work league matches. He will also assign the officials for the Southern Conference Wrestling Championship, which will move to Kimmel Arena in Asheville, N.C., in 2015 and run in conjunction with the SoCon Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships.

“I am confident Joe Tauber will make a positive impact on Southern Conference wrestling,” Iamarino said. “He is a highly respected veteran official who understands the need for the evaluation, mentoring and accountability among officials. His hire will benefit our programs by providing a consistent message for the officials who work their matches.”

Tauber will bring more than 30 years of collegiate and high school officiating experience to the position. A decorated retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel, Tauber has officiated nine NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, seven Big Ten tournaments, two SoCon tournaments, one Atlantic Coast Conference tournament, seven Eastern Wrestling League Championships and three Eastern Regional Championships.

He has also worked numerous Division III regional wrestling championships and the Southern Scuffle seven times. Tauber has officiated several high school state championship bouts in Maryland and Delaware and was named the high school official of the year in Maryland in1999.

Tauber is currently a volunteer wrestling coach at First Flight High School in Kill Devil Hills, N.C.

Tauber earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Maryland in 1979 and completed his juris doctorate from Ohio Northern University Law School in 1983.

“We are dedicated to elevating the quality and perception of SoCon wrestling,” Iamarino said. “The hiring of a true coordinator of officials, combined with bringing the wrestling championships to Asheville during our basketball tournament weekend, illustrates that commitment.”
