Shivaun Landeros (Sparks, Nev./Edward C. Reed) gave it her best shot on Wednesday. Unfortunately, she came up short as No.24 USC-Upstate knocked off the Appalachian State University softball team 1-0 at Sywassink/Lloyd Field.

Landeros, who tossed her 13th complete game of the season, coughed up one earned run on eight hits with three strikeouts in the loss. The Spartans (41-5) scored the game's only run in the third inning.

Lindsay Kelly led off with a double down the right field line, advanced to third on a groundout by Aly Schneider, and scored on Shellie Robinson's base hit to right field.

On the other hand, winning pitcher Anna Miller held the Mountaineers (17-26) to just two hits. Dani Heichen (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Pembroke Pines Charter) extended her hitting streak to 11 games going 1-3. The second Mountaineer hit came off the bat of left fielder Kristen Terry (Kernersville, N.C./Glenn) in the fifth inning.

Terry on an infield single that moved pinch runner Pepper Butler (Delray Beach, Fla./Boca Raton Community) to second base. Butler was pinch running for Alex Sohl (Paducah, Ky./Lone Oak) who reached first after being hit by a pitch. But both runners were left stranded to end the threat.

The Black and Gold would squander another prime scoring chance in the fourth inning. After Heichen reached second base following an error by Meredith Barnes in left field, Cynthia Gomez (Oxnard, Calif./Pacifica) would laid down a sacrifice bunt moving Heichen to third. Sarah Warnock struck out, Lindsay Loudermilk walked putting runners on at first and third, but Cara Parker fanned to end the inning.

Miller (15-3) was practically untouchable all day. She struck out 12 and walked one.

App State will host its last home Southern Conference series ever this weekend with UNC-Greensboro coming to town. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m.; They wrap up the series with a 1 p.m. single game on Sunday.

Following the game on Sunday, the App State softball program will honor its seniors for 2014. Players Lindsay Loudermilk and Whitney Johnson (Dunn, N.C./N.C. School of Science and Math) will be recognized for their contributions to the program and university. Senior student assistant coach, Mieszko Kwiatkowski, will also be recognized following the game.
