Appalachian State University baseball’s Michael Pierson (Coral Springs, Fla./Pine Crest) has been named the Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for his achievements on the field and in the classroom, the SoCon announced on Wednesday.

Pierson hit .412 (7-for-17) with three doubles, a home run, three RBI and three runs scored over four games this past week.

He had multiple hits in all three games of Appalachian State’s SoCon weekend series at Elon, including a double in each contest. On Saturday, he went 2-for-4 with a double, walk, RBI and two runs scored in Appalachian’s 10-4 romp over the Phoenix.

The junior capped the impressive week by blasting a solo home run in Tuesday’s 11-0 win over Virginia Tech. In the process, he extended his hitting streak to 11 games, which is the longest current streak by a Mountaineer.

Playing third base instead of his traditional defensive position at second base due to an infield shuffle caused by an injury to starting shortstop Dillon Dobson (Hamptonville, N.C./Starmount), Pierson was also perfect in 14 fielding chances on the week.

For the season, Pierson ranks second on the team with a .316 batting average, eight doubles and three home runs. His 20 RBI are good for third on the club.

In the classroom, Pierson sports a 3.42 cumulative grade point average as a marketing major.

Pierson and the Mountaineers open a five-game homestand on Wednesday night when they host Gardner-Webb. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Appalachian State’s Beaver Field at Jim and Bettie Smith Stadium.
