Hickory Crawdads LHP Yohander Mendez has been named the South Atlantic League's Pitcher of the Week for April 14 -20th, after his dominating start against the Asheville Tourists last week.
Mendez, 19, was close to perfect his last time out on April 18th in Asheville. The 6'4", 183-pound left-hander threw six shutout innings against the Tourists, allowing only two singles and no walks while striking out a career-high 10 batters. Mendez retired the first 13-straight batters he faced to begin the game before allowing an infield single in the 5th inning. The Venezuela native induced double plays after each of his two hits allowed, resulting in him facing the minimum of 18 batters over his six innings pitched.
Signed by the Texas Rangers as a non-drafted free agent in 2011, Mendez is currently 2-0 with a 1.17 ERA on the year. The southpaw has struck out 16 while walking only one during his 15.1 total innings pitched. Mendez currently leads all Crawdads starting pitchers in ERA, innings pitched, strikeouts and WHIP (0.91).
