Lees-McRae senior Tyler Dunn has been named the Conference Carolinas Mens Indoor Track & Field Winter Scholar Athlete of the Year, the conference office announced Monday morning.
Each school submits candidates that are the best of the best for the conference from their sport while meeting certain qualifications for nomination. The qualifications include being a junior or senior student-athlete with a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or higher on a 4.0 scale in all work completed at their member institution that have played in a conference sponsored sport. The GPA is calculated based on the student-athletes cumulative average through the previous semester and each student-athlete must have attended their member institution for at least one academic year. Additionally, in order to qualify for the award the student-athlete must be a current member of the All-Conference Carolinas First, Second, or Third Team that were recently selected by head coaches from conference member institutions that nominate and then vote upon award winners.
Dunn posted an electrifying season to top off his Lees-McRae Indoor Track and Field career. The senior finished sixth in the 3,000-meter run at the 2014 Mountaineer Open Indoor with a time of 9:32.54 putting him 15 seconds ahead of the seventh place finisher. The Jasper, Ga., native helped LMC earn third in the distance medley relay at the Conference Carolinas Indoor Track and Field Championships.
In Fall 2013, Dunn made the Presidents Honor Roll and Deans List. During that time he finished 13th in the Conference Carolinas Cross Country Championships, which placed him on the Third Team All-Conference list.
Dunn and the Bobcats will host the Conference Carolinas Outdoor Track & Field Championships starting Friday, April 25.
