The Hickory Crawdads received a stellar pitching performance from left-hander Yohander Mendez Friday night as he tossed six shutout innings with ten strikeouts in a 7-2 win against the Asheville Tourists at

McCormick Field.

Mendez was working on a perfect game through the fourth inning. He struck out eight of the first 12 batters he faced.

Correlle Prime broke up the perfect game with an infield single in the fifth. Undaunted, Mendez promptly turned a double play to end the inning. He coughed up a one-out single in the sixth before he endused another double-play ball to end the frame.

Mendez (2-0) faced the minimum of 18 Asheville batters duirng his stay on the mound.

The six innings pitched and his ten strikeouts are both season highs for the 19-year-old.

The Crawdads (8-8) gave Mendez all the support he needed offensively with a five-run outburst in the third that handed Mendez a commanding 6-0 lead. Two Asheville errors opened the flood gates. Nomar Mazra had the big blow in the frame with a two-run double to left field; Lewis Brinson and Jairo Beras had RBI singles in the inning.

First baseman Kevin Torres homered in the ninth. The Crawdads had their best offensivel showing since their 7-3 win in Greensboro on April 5th.
