|Crawdads Earn Doubleheader Split|

The Hickory Crawdads split their doubleheader against the Kannapolis Intimidators Tuesday night at L.P. Fran Stadium. The 'Dads won game one 3-1, but lost the nightcap 9-2.
The Crawdads (6-7) combined the excellent pitching of Cole Wiper and Ryne Slack with some early offense en route to a 3-1 win in the opener. The 'Dads struck early with a pair of runs in the top of the first.
A lead-off single by second baseman Travis Demeritte and a walk to Nomar Mazara put runners on first and second with nobody out. That set the stage for first baseman Nick Vickerson who plated Demeritte on an RBI single to left; center fielder Lewis Brinson brought in Mazara with an RBI fielder's choice to give Hickory its 2-0 lead.
Wiper, despite giving up a run in the top of the second, kept the Intimidators in check. The right-hander went five innings, allowing a one run on two hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
Leading 2-1, the 'Dads offense plated an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Mazara launched his first home run of the year, a solo shot to right field. Slack finished things off by tossing two shutout innings to end the game. He stuck out five in the process.
In game two, Kannapolis jumped on top early and waltz away with a 9-2 win. The Intimidators (5-8) scored four times in the first inning. off losing pitcher Collin Wiles (1-1) of the Crawdads.
The Crawdads responded with a run in the bottom of the first, thanks to an RBI single by Vickerson. But the Crawdads were kept in check by Tyler Danish (2-0), who gave up two runs, one earned, and scattered six hits over six innings.
The Intimidators put the contest out of reach with two runs in the third and a single run in the fourth to take a commanding 7-1 lead.
Demeritte ended the night going a combined 3-7 with a double and two runs scored, while Vickerson went 2-6 with a pair of RBIs. Brinson went 2-5 with a double, a RBI, a run scored and a walk over the two games.
The Crawdads wrap up the homestand this morning with an 11 a.m. game against the Intimidators.
