After hitting .533 (8-for-15) and driving in eight runs over four games, Appalachian State University designated hitter Matt Brill (Coal Valley, Ill./Moline) has been named the Southern Conference Player of

the Week, the SoCon office announced on Monday.

Brill extended his Appalachian State season-best hitting streak to 15 games by hitting safely in all four contests last week, including three multi-hit outings. He also had at least one RBI in each game.

The true freshman opened the week by notching a career-high three hits and driving in two runs on Wednesday versus High Point and closed it by going 2-for-3 with a career-best four RBI in Sunday’s series-clinching 10-6 win over The Citadel. Brill gave the Mountaineers a commanding 5-1 lead on Sunday with an opposite-field, two-out, three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning.

In between, Brill went 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI in Friday’s series-opening loss to The Citadel and went 2-for-5 with a pivotal RBI double in Saturday’s 6-5 victory over the Bulldogs.

Last week’s 8-for-15 spurt not only extended Brill’s hitting streak to 15 games but also raised his season batting average to .412. He is batting .473 (26-for-55) with 10 multi-hit games during his 15-game streak.

Brill is the second-straight Mountaineer to be named the SoCon’s Player of the Week. Dillon Dobson (Hamptonville, N.C./Starmount) earned the recognition after compiling three home runs and 12 RBI in four games the previous week.

Brill and the Mountaineers begin a five-game road stint on Wednesday when they travel to Wake Forest. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Wake Forest Baseball Park in Winston-Salem, N.C.
