Furman Maintains Lead at SoCon Championships PDF Print

First-round leader Furman held off a hard-charging Chattanooga squad to hold a one-stroke lead at the end of the second round of the Southern Conference Women’s Golf Championship at Moss Creek Golf

Club’s North Course on Monday. The Mocs’ Emily McLennan retained her lead, as well, as she has a one-stroke advantage on teammate Jordan Britt in the race for medalist honors.

Furman, seeking its record 14th SoCon championship, saw every bit of its first-round, seven-stroke advantage over Chattanooga evaporate, as the teams were tied atop the leaderboard late in Monday’s round before the Paladins inched back ahead. The four-time defending SoCon champion Mocs shot a tournament-best 295 Monday to finish within a stroke of Furman, which shaved four strokes off its opening 305 to move its two-day total to 606 (305-301). Chattanooga dropped 17 strokes from its opening-round score to sit at 607 (312-295).

Britt, the 2012 SoCon medalist, led the Mocs’ charge, firing a tournament-low 3-under 69 Monday to vault from a tie for 14th into sole possession of second behind McLennan at 5-over 149. Her 69 was one stroke off the tournament record for a single round.

McLennan, the 2013 SoCon Freshman of the Year and the first-round leader, shot a 3-over 75 Monday for a two-day 148 to maintain her lead. Should she win Tuesday, she would become Chattanooga’s fourth different golfer to earn medalist honors in as many years.

Furman’s Taylor Totland sits third with a 6-over 150 (76-74). The freshman had an interesting round Monday, notching her first career hole-in-one on the par-3 fifth hole to take over the individual lead, making the turn at 2-under. She was 4-over on the back nine, however, mixing a pair of bogeys with a double-bogey on 18 as McLennan reclaimed the lead.

For the second straight day, Furman’s entire scoring four finished in the top 10. Aubrie Street (76-77) and Valentina Romero (75-78) are tied for sixth at 9-over 153, while Laura DeMarco is just a stroke back in a tie for eighth after a 1-over 73 Monday.

Chattanooga’s Agathe Sauzon, the 2013 medalist, jumped into a tie for eighth with a 3-over 75 Monday to move to 10-over 154 for the tournament and give the Mocs three golfers among the top 10.

Elon has two golfers in the top 10 and moved up one spot in the team standings to third, 14 shots out of the lead at 620 (318-302). The Phoenix’s Kelsey Badmaev (83-71) and Emily Brooks (77-77) are tied eighth at 10-over 154. Badmaev joined Britt as the only two golfers under par Monday.

Appalachian State freshman Emily Stinson moved up three spots to fourth in the individual standings, turning in a 2-over 74 Monday to move to 151. Right behind her in fifth is Samford’s Alex Jasper, who owns an 8-over 152 (76-76).

In the team standings, each squad improved at least three shots from the first round to the second. Western Carolina dropped 25 strokes Monday with a collective 300, the second-best score of the day behind Chattanooga’s, but was unable to move in the team standings, remaining fifth at 625 (325-300).

Samford (312-309=621) dropped from a tie for second to fourth place. Wofford is sixth at 641 (326-315), followed by Appalachian State (331-313=644), The Citadel (327-324=651) and UNCG (337-319=656).

With inclement weather looming in Tuesday’s forecast, the third and final round has been changed to an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. Live stats can be found at www.golfstatresults.com. The winner will earn the SoCon’s automatic bid to the NCAA regionals.
