Junior Dani Heichen (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Pembroke Pines Charter) was named Southern Conference Player of the Week, announced by the league on Monday.
Heichen is the first Mountaineer to earn Player of the Week honors since Allie Cashion on March 12, 2013. Heichen is the fifth player in Mountaineer softball history to garner the Player of the Week honors.
The Pembroke Pines, Fla. native posted a .650 batting average, a .650 on-base percentage and scored eight runs while going 13-for-20 in a five-game stretch last week that included road games at ETSU and Elon. Heichen went 1-for-4 and 3-for-4 in the doubleheader at ETSU including her first RBI of the season last Tuesday. This past weekend at Elon, Heichen hit 3-for-4 in each game and proved to be the ultimate table setter in the leadoff spot last week. This past week, Heichen has raised her season average from .281 to .333 and currently leads the team in average during conference play at .425.
Heichen would also steal her 16th base of the season to lead the team and the conference, as well as, the 46th of her career which places her in a tie for eighth all-time in program history.
With Heichen at the top of the lineup, the Mountaineers scored a total of 37 runs this past week that includes two games in which the Mountaineers would win by a run-rule.
Appalachian State University softball will host Campbell in doubleheader action on Tuesday with a first pitch at 4 p.m. On Thursday, the Apps will travel to Radford for a twin bill that is slated for a 4 p.m. start time.
