Tyler Pennell of Zap Fitness Foundation in Blowing Rock, N.C., and a member of the U.S. Men's 1/2 Marathon Team, turned in a 33rd-place finish at the World Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark on
The race featured 201 runners from 56 countries. Pennell completed the race in one-hour, two-minutes, 21-seconds. He was the second American runner to finish the race.
Overall, the U.S. men finished seventh.
Pennel is one of the most decorated athletes in Western State University history. Pennel was a multiple time All American while in Gunnison and won the NCAA Division II 10,000m title in 2012.
He has run 28:23 for 10,000m, 13:45.63 for 5,000m (2013 Raleigh Relays) and helped lead his team to the NCAA XC Title in 2011. In his first year as a ZAP-Reebok athlete, Pennell turned in three top-10 performances at US Championship events.
Pennell was ninth at the Gate River Run 15k (44:17), 10th at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, and seventh at the Peach Tree Road Race. He added his fourth top 10 finish of 2013 with his third-place finish at the inaugural U.S. National Road Racing Championships, contested over 12k in Alexandria.
In the fall of 2012m Pennell finished fifth at the Manchester Road Race in 21:36. In January of 2014, Pennell qualified for his first U.S. National Team. By virtue of his four-h place finish at the U.S. Half Marathon Championships, he qualified for the World Half Marathon Team. His finishing time of 1:01:44 also places him 16th all time on the U.S. list.
Pennell and Stephanie Pezzullo of Zap Fitness will compete in the BAA Invitational, a 5-kilometer race, in Boston, MA., Saturday. Zap Fitness will not have a runner in the Boston Marathon this year.
