The Watauga High boys' tennis team captured its 19th conference championship in the last 21 years (1994-2012, 2014) with a 9-0 win against Freedom Thursday at the WHS Tennis Courts on Senior Day.

Seniors Landon Taylor and Josh Lampkins led the way with staight sets wins at No.1 and No.2 singles before they teamed up for a win at No.1 doubles.

Taylor defeated Nick Bruinsma of Freedom, 6-0 6-0, at No.1 singles; Lampkins defeated Warren Bristol of the Patriots, 6-2 6-1, at No.2. Taylor and Lampkins knocked off Bruinsma/Bristol of the Patriots 8-1 at No.1 doubles.

The Pioneers (10-2 overall; 7-0 NW3A/4A Conference) will be a No.1 seed in the state dual team playoffs, which begin Tuesay, April 29. The Pioneers will host a first-round game against the No.1 seed from the Mountain Athletic 3A-4A Conference.

The Class 4A Western Regionals for individual tennis will be at Cornelius-Hough, May 2-3.

NOTES: It incorrectably reported Thursday that  the Pioneers had nailed down their 15th title in 17 years. It was actually 19 in the last 21 years, dating back to 1993.
