Women's Tennis Cruises Past Belmont Abbey, 8-1.....A quartet of LMC women's tennis players notched two wins each while cruising to an 8-1 win against Belmont Abbey in Conference Carolinas play Thursday afternoon at the LMC Tennis Courts in Banner Elk, N.C.


The Bobcats (2-13, 1-7 CC) snapped a lengthy losing skid by winning their first conference match of the year. The Crusaders (1-15, 0-7) remain winless in CC play and earned their lone win at No. 3 singles.


The tandem of Samantha Wohlers (Windsor, Ontario, Canada) and Hillary Lutz (Shelby, N.C.) put LMC up early with an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles.


The duo of Caroline Green (Columbia, Tenn.) and Taylor Bost (Jefferson, Ga.) claimed No. 2 doubles with ease, 8-1.


Jordan Mayer (Timberlake, N.C.) and Margaret Bumgarner (Hurdle Mills, N.C.) battled to an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles, putting the Bobcats up 3-0.


Wohlers fended off Lydia Schellenberg in No. 1 singles play with a 6-3, 7-6 victory before Lutz downed Katharine Miller in a three-set thriller 3-6, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 singles.


Bost claimed her second win of the day in No. 4 singles competition in a 7-6, 6-2 fashion.


Chapman kept Brigid Donohue at arm's length, on her way to a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles before Bumgarner impressed with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles.


LMC wraps up its season when it travels to North Greenville Saturday at 3 p.m. in Tigerville, S.C.



Lakey Tallies Two Wins in Heartbreak Loss



Lees-McRae freshman Garrett Lakey earned wins in singles and doubles play, but LMC fell in gut-wrenching fashion to Belmont Abbey, 5-4, in Conference Carolinas men's tennis action Thursday afternoon at the LMC Tennis Courts in Banner Elk, N.C.


The Crusaders (2-12, 1-5 CC) earned their first conference win while Conner McMann and Aaron Mullenix collected two wins apiece. The Bobcats (3-11, 0-7) split singles play, but ended up on the short end of doubles play.


Senior Carlos Pinel (Vitoria, Espiritio Santo, Brazil) continued his impressive week by outmuscling Eduardo Escobar in three sets, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 singles play. Pinel was tabbed to the Conference Carolinas All-Academic team earlier in the week.


Junior Hang Lak Choi (Newton, N.C.) dominated Damien Nelson, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 4 singles.


Lakey swiped a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles before teaming up with Joao Araujo (Curitiba, Puerto Rico) to claim a 9-8 win at No. 1 doubles.


Pinel and Lak Choi dropped a close 8-6 battle at No. 2 doubles.


LMC concludes its season at North Greenville Saturday at 3 p.m. in Tigerville, S.C.




Freshman Duo Impresses; LMC Drops Pair at Erskine


Sophomore Sadie Lagle drove in LMC's lone run in game one while Lees-McRae fell 5-1 before freshman Sarah Stallings walloped three hits and swiped a bag in game two in a heartbreaking 7-6 loss in nine innings at Huggins Field Thursday afternoon in Due West, S.C.


The Flying Fleet (15-17, 6-4 CC) produced four multi-run innings in the two games while Lydia Trexler racked up four RBI. The Bobcats (8-31, 3-7) bashed out 17 hits on the day while freshman Charlie Dutton (Monroe, Ga.) mowed down eight batters in 6.1 innings of work.


Game 1 – Erskine 5, LMC 1


EC used consecutive hits in the bottom of the first to put runners on second and third with no outs before Ashlyn Hicks plated the game's first run with an RBI fielder's choice. Jacquie Hill delivered a run-scoring double to make it 2-0.


Trexler notched her first RBI of the day when she plated Whitney Brown with a single in the bottom of the second.


LMC got on the board with some two out magic after Valerie Hickey (Umatilla, Fla.) banged a double off the wall before Lagle (Harmony, N.C.) stroked an RBI single up the middle.


The Flying Fleet responded with a pair of runs when Kathryn Windham cranked a run-scoring double before Hill notched another RBI with a groundout in the bottom of the third.


Dutton took the rubber in the bottom of the fourth and was lights out while retiring all six batters she faced and struck out the side in the fourth.


The Bobcats were unable to capitalize on a pinch-hit double from Amanda Decker (Apex, N.C.) in the seventh when a groundout ended the contest.


Freshman Taylor Billings (Sophia, N.C.) took the loss when she allowed five earned in three innings of work.


EC's Danica Newton struck out 10 in the complete game effort.


Game 2 – Erskine 7, LMC 6 (9 innings)


The Bobcat offense came to life when they staked Celeste Sheppard (East Julian, N.C.) with a 2-0 lead before she threw a pitch.


Lagle plated Stallings (Greensboro, N.C.) with an RBI single before Ashley Lindsay (Holly Springs, N.C.) registered an RBI groundout. Stallings led both teams with her 3-for-5 performance.


A trio of LMC errors led to two EC runs in the bottom of the second, tying it at 2.


Decker smoked a RBI double to give the Bobcats the lead in the see-saw battle before Sheppard helped her own cause with a bases loaded walk. Senior Lori Fulmer (Prosperity, S.C.) used her speed to beat out a single to plate Hollie Crickenberger (Boydton, Va.) in a three-run third inning.


Trexler delivered the big blow with a three-run homer in the fourth to put EC up 6-5.


Fulmer tied it with a RBI double in the top half of the fifth.


Dutton worked out of a second and third one-out jam with two strikeouts to keep EC at bay.


Both offenses fell silent despite LMC loading the bases in the seventh. Hicks connected on the walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth.


The Bobcats host Barton in a CC doubleheader on Saturday at 2 & 4 on Senior Day.



Women's Lacrosse Upended by Erskine, 19-7



Six different LMC women's lacrosse players netted a goal, but it wasn't enough while LMC dropped a 19-7 decision to Erskine in a Conference Carolinas tilt on a beautiful Thursday afternoon at Huggins Field in Due West, S.C.


The Flying Fleet (8-7, 2-4 CC) was powered by the duo of Samantha Burns and Ali Cole, who combined for 13 goals and six assists. The Bobcats (5-7, 0-5) scooped 23 groundballs while senior Katelin Rooney (Naples, Fla.) led both squads with six draw controls.


LMC sophomore Taylor Drake (Jupiter, Fla.) reeled in a pass from Jenah Tracy (Naples, Fla.) to put the Bobcats up 1-0 only 37 seconds into the contest.


Drake led the Bobcats with two goals and tied for the team-high with four shots.


EC's Burns and Cole took control while being responsible for the teams' next six goals while the Flying Fleet went on a 7-0 run over the next 20:15.


Junior Ximena Dupont (Fort Meyers, Fla.) whipped a shot past Konstandena Brown off of a free position attempt with 6:20 remaining in the first half.


Freshman teammate Kirsten English (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) accomplished the same feat with only four ticks on the clock in the opening half while LMC trailed 11-3.


Senior Nicole Dupont (Fort Meyers, Fla.) and Drake notched a goal each in a span of 70 seconds.


EC responded with a pair of goals in a 17 second span before Tracy found the back of the net with 18:14 remaining.


Callie Gregg (Roanoke, Va.) scored LMC's final goal at the 7:32 mark.


Sophomore Mia Emmerson (Orlando, Fla.) stopped 11 shots on the day.


The Flying Fleet's Burns impressed with an eight-goal performance while Brown earned with win with two saves.


LMC concludes its season with a trip to Mount Olive at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
