'Dads Prevail in 2-1 Pitchers' Duel PDF Print

The Hickory Crawdads combined strong pitching with timely hitting as they eked out a 2-1 win Sunday afternoon against Greensboro at NewBridge Bank

Park. The 'Dads (3-1) took three of four against the Grasshoppers this past weekend.

Yohander Mendez, Kelvin Vasquez, and Ryne Slack limited the Grasshoppers to one run on six hits. That trio also struck out five and walked three. The only blemish a solo home run by Juan Avila in the fourth.

Offensively, Nick Vickerson came up with the biggest hit of the day. His two-out, two-RBI double in the sixth inning gave the 'Dads all the runs they needed.

A lead-off bunt single by Lewis Brinson, a sacrifice bunt by Eduard Pinto, and a walk to Ronald Guzman, set the stage for Vickerson. He worked the count full before he drove the ball down the left field line for a double, plating both Brinson and Guzman to give the 'Dads their 2-1 lead.

Mendez (1-0) picked up his first win of the year. He went five innings and he gave up a run on five hits, with no walks and two strikeouts. Vasquez, who got out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth, went 3.1 scoreless innings, giving up one hit with two walkes and three strikeouts.

Slack came on with one out in the ninth, retired the last two batters to record his first save of the season.

Vickerson finished the game 1-3 with a double, two RBIs; Brinson, Pinto and Mazara all had one hit apiece.

The Crawdads are scheduled to play at Kannapolis tonight to start a 3-game series with the rival Intimidators. First pitch Monday night is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
